Meet Ross, a TOP CERT seller on PPH specialising in web development, mobile apps and software architecture.
Tell us a bit about yourself. How did you get into freelancing?
I reached a point in my career after 10 years as a developer. I eventually became a technical lead and manager where I was hiring talented contractors and thinking to myself I would love that flexibility and freedom! I decided to take the plunge and began contracting immediately in and around London. Now 5 years have passed and I can safely say this way of working suits me and gives me the opportunity to grow with the flexibility to pursue interests outside of work.
What was your previous job before deciding to go freelance?
Team lead developer in a large online gaming company working with a wide range of technology and amazingly talented people.
How did you come across PPH?
What was your first job like on PPH?
It was good as it perfectly suited my skills set and background in Drupal framework. It was a small job that led to ongoing work with the client.
What is a typical day like for you?
I organise my tasks for the day either from my home office or at a company in Kensington I contract for. I spend a lot of time on communication and delegation. I typically focus on removing blockers and try to work proactively for clients rather than reactively. Being organised and communicating with clients well is what elevates freelancers and companies to a high level.
How does freelancing compare to a 9-5?
After 5 years of freelancing I can say that sometimes you will be busy and others you won’t be so busy. As time goes on you get better at organisation so I try to stick to the 9-6 working day to ensure I don’t burn out and work at a sustainable and reliable pace. Working smarter and sometimes paying for online organisation tools can really help. I really like using Droptask to get an overview of where I am with projects.
What benefits have you found by using PPH?
I have made it into the top certificate on PPH which means I have many great customer reviews. I’m a responsive communicator and deliver what I promise. This means I get a stream of enquiries who target the top tier of freelancers on PPH to help them achieve a quality result.
What does your future hold? Where would you like to take this?
I have recently taken on a retiree which I think is a hugely neglected market in the freelancing arena. He has over 40 years experience as a technical business analyst, things have been going very well and I anticipate I will take on more people from a similar background. The flexibility freelancing offers suits this demographic perfectly and their years of experience are so valuable.
What are your top 5 tips for freelancers who are new to PPH?
- Consistently apply for jobs.
- Don’t go too cheap or too expensive (!)
- Keep it short and to the point.
- Read the proposal and read it again.
- Help buyers who might not have such expert knowledge and experience as you do to make the right choices.
What are your top tips for web development?
- Keep organised – there’s also nothing wrong with a list but keep it short and prioritise,
- When choosing technology try to use rational models to choose rather than something you ‘like’
- Delegate where you can
- Read the ‘Five Minute Manager’ book and ‘Good to Great’ books.
