PPH Webinar Round-Up: ‘How To Hire a Freelancer Like a Pro, From a Pro’

Last week we had a great turn out for our webinar, ‘How To Hire a Freelancer Like a Pro, From a Pro’, presented by our very own Head of Community, Ariele Krantzow. The webinar walked us through the process of hiring a freelancer and gave tips on how to hire one like a professional, focusing on our two online outsourcing sites – PeoplePerHour and SuperTasker.

Outsourcing work to freelancers can be a time-saving and cost-effective way to get some work done, especially for businesses. It’s a particularly a great way to get specialised, expert work done at a decent price. But hiring a freelancer can be a little tricky. If you want a great freelancing experience with professional results, you need to hire one like a professional!

In case you missed it, a recorded version of the webinar, ‘How To Hire a Freelancer Like a Pro, From a Pro’, is available below, or on-demand on our YouTube channel, here.

The first thing covered in the webinar is how to choose whether to outsource or not. It will talk about deciding which activities you will want to outsource, how much time you spend on managing projects, and the value of your time over money.

Once you’ve come to the conclusion to outsource, you need to decide who to hire. The next point will discuss comparing portfolios; judging price vs. expertise, availability, and rate of meeting deadlines.

Next is the proposal/brief. When you write this, it should be as specific as possible. Also include examples wherever possible, and be clear about the deliverables (file type, quantity, etc.)

After the proposal is the contract. Make sure to get it all in writing, outlining the deliverables, due dates, revisions, and costs. You will more than likely be expected to make a down payment at this stage.

Agree on forms of communication, and be sure to be available to answer any questions from the freelancer. The freelancer will also need to know when you will not be available to answer questions. Your delays will delay them.

If and when revisions come up, use them wisely and be specific as to what you like and what changes you want made. Also be sure to get back to the freelancer concerning revisions as quickly as possible.

Changes in the job will come up on occasion, so be prepared for it. Such changes can also make the cost go up. Be sure to work with the freelancer if changes do occur and work out a new deadline.

When it comes to payment, be sure to pay on time, as it is respectful. And be sure to agree on a method of payment beforehand.

Sometimes things go wrong and disputes arise. This is why it’s important to have everything in writing from the start. SuperTasker and PeoplePerHour have customer service representatives there to help you in this case.  Also, be sure to write honest reviews on all platforms, whether you have a good or a bad experience with your freelancer.
