Be the first

In our ongoing mission to improve PeoplePerHour, we’ve implemented a small but hopefully valued change for Freelancers. It’s called “Be the First” and it is as simple as this: if you find a Job in your chosen categories that has no Bids and you are the first to submit your Bid, you will not use up a Bid credit.

Now we said it’s simple, and it really is, but there is one detail here to emphasise so there’s no confusion. It’s the first successfully submitted Bid that is free. In the rare and unlikely event that two freelancers find the same Job and decide to Bid on it, the freelancer who submits their bid first gets it free. (We know this seems a little unlikely but we thought we’d clear this up from the start.)

So, we hope you enjoy the change and let us know how you get on. Don’t forget to “Be the first!”

what a brilliant, and lovely change to the system!

My only worry, is that people may “rush” bids, without properly assessing the job first….
Just so they can try and not loose a bid credit…

  2. It’s just a bit. You wouldn’t bid for any job you don’t want to take, even if it is free, right?

I don’t think it would be such a rush for bidding.

    good start PPh team

  4. EileenG says:

If you use up your credits, can you continue to bid on jobs if you are the first to submit, or is it only if you already have bids in credit?

  5. Dipesh says:

when i get notification of new project and i go for bid on that…..there i see many bids already placed….how i can be first.
its not my fault to be late. PPH send me late notification.
    :(

  6. Sanjay Verma says:

    Great news.

    Thanks PPH.

  7. Max says:

It’s not a casino or a lottery. I think freelancers don’t have to pay for bids.

  8. sobhana says:

Fully I posted a job. But at last my authentication is failed. I want an another credit card.

  9. Richard Shaw says:

This is pretty naff considering that email alerts for jobs aren’t sent out instantly. Also – has anybody asked for this?

What we asked for is for bid credits to be refunded if jobs aren’t awarded because the vast majority of jobs are abandoned with no explanation. For example, Xenios himself has posted 38 jobs but only awarded 19. Only one job has been cancelled.

Your reason for not refunding credits is that clients can choose to accept a bid at some point in the future – but surely there should be an expiration date, whereby the job is cancelled and freelancers are refunded? Or do you really believe that a client might accept a bid a year or two down the line?

The real reason you won’t refund us is because it will cost you money. But this is a blatant conflict of interest.

Currently there is nothing stopping you from exploiting your own flawed system; you could easily flood the boards with bogus jobs, intentionally wasting bids and forcing us to buy more.

I’m not suggesting that you are doing this, simply that we can’t tell either way. You need to remove even the appearance of unethical behaviour in order to show us that you are an ethical company.

You need to change the system so that projects automatically cancel after a set amount of time, resulting in our bids being refunded – instead of implementing silly gimmicks that will only help a lucky few.

I really appreciate this. Thanks PPH.

  15. writepal925 says:

innovative and a good incentive to open your email and visit the site more often.
should work fine for me who got only a few bids in my name everytime.

  16. Alan Samar says:

I saw and now comment on that photo of presumably free lancers as others may have seen but missed it:

IT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A GOOD PHOTO.

Reason: Runners as shown in photo suggest a run for work which devalues free lance talents, self respect, dignity of work and honor of bidders.

If you take a survey and try to know if any of your bidders will run like that for work, you will get a surprising result.

Please don’t jeopardize an only good site, PPH, that I found better than other site to bid as free lancer.

PLEASE CHANGE THE PHOTO, IF POSSIBLE, SO THAT YOU DON’T LOSE ANY FREE LANCER.

  17. Angela Anson says:

Every time I put a bid in there are already 4 or 8 bids even if I do it as soon as the notification comes in.

Can you just confirm that from now on we have to pay for every bid we put in. Is that correct?

  18. asif ali says:

    great news
    thanks pph

  19. martin says:

    Hey Angela,

It’s business as usual with Bidding, except if you are the first person to *submit* a bid on a job.

    Thanks!

  21. This is an excellent decision. Thanks to people per hour to make this change.

  22. martin says:

    Hey Richard,

Thanks for your feedback. I think refunding (at some point) bids on jobs that are never awarded is a really interesting idea, I’ll speak to the team here about it…

    Martin, PeoplePerHour team

  23. Joanna says:

Great idea! And I would fully support a refund of bid credits for jobs that are never awarded… go for it PPH!

  24. Emma says:

Wow, people are so ungrateful. PPH don’t HAVE to do this. If you are keen to work and not getting the emails straight away then keep checking the site!

PPH offer an amazing service at a low cost but it’s still a business needing to make money.

I’d like to thank PPH for this and the other opportunities you have provided enabling me to get more freelance work.

  25. Rania says:

    Hi,
Many people now post jobs in PPH + other freelancers sites.
So, If a bid is not awarded to PPH freelancer, the bid count should return.
Posting a Job MUST NOT be free.

  26. Chris says:

    Thanks PPH,

    Seems like great deal!!!

  27. Bruce Graham says:

Is there any way that we could have RSS feeds set up for the Categories that we are members of? Then we’d get a feed alert when new jobs are posted.
I don’t pretend to be a Web Guru – but this works for other sites I belong to, so perhaps something is possible?
    Bruce

  28. Farahmand says:

    That sounds great.

  29. Walter says:

This photograph is a running of our life. Who will be the first ?

  30. Kylee says:

I am freelancer who was a paying subscriber and I used most of my credits and never got a job as yet, and I think the idea of refunding credit if we do not get any work is a good idea and Emma you must be one of the lucky ones who have scored work from here and there many out there like me have been on pph for ages and haven’t scored any work and have been applying for so many jobs and I personally think the idea of the first person to bid for the job and get the credit free is very unfair.

  31. Suzanne says:

    Some people are so serious.

Its just a bit of fun and I think its great.

  32. Mugo Theuri says:

Have you thought of the different world time zones? By the time you post jobs some of the freelancers may be sleeping. Obviously there are several other aspects of this “competition” that will give undue advantage to freelancers in the PPH time zone. For instance my new jobs notification today indicates that it was posted yesterday. I was working until 12.35 on the internet this morning and the jobs notification had not been posted when I went to bed. Sometimes the notification is not posted at all and about three weeks ago I was forced to officially complain. How am I expected to compete? Set the goal posts before the match begins!!!!!!!

  33. Mugo Theuri says:

Further to my earlier comment I notice that this “Be the First” stuff has been going on since way back in May yet I learned about it through this posting which I received yesterday.

  34. Sian says:

I’d forgotten about this change but was actually bidding on 2 jobs today and both were free! Some folk have said its ‘naff’ or ‘hasn’t been asked for’ – but it put an unsuspecting smile on my face today..!
A refreshing idea from PPH… and no, I wouldn’t have ‘rushed’ an inappropriate bid just to get it ‘free’, but its a delisghtful surprise when it happens!

  35. varun says:

Good Change.. Like it very much… :)

  36. Portrait Avenue says:

Nice system. By this change, I feel comfortable to work and start in PPH.

    Martin -

In June you said ” I think refunding (at some point) bids on jobs that are never awarded is a really interesting idea, I’ll speak to the team here about it…”

    Any progress to report?

    b

  41. LN says:

I agree with Richard Shaw and Kylee. I’m glad Martin spoke to the team about it.

  42. SysFix IT Support says:

This move is not a move to benefit freelancers.
Quite simply – if a job does not get bid upon, the poster can get a refund on their money. This Post a bid first idea is quite simply a move to give customers a bid no matter how poor or irrelevant in order to secure the fact they have done thier job and don’t have to give any money back.

  43. Dawn says:

Sounds like a good idea and it’s all about the timing. Does this work if the freelancer has used all their monthly credits? Or are they required to have credit remaining to not use that one credit?

  44. ali zohaib says:

I like this change in PPH,

  47. Wasim says:

I just joined and the whole idea of buying credits to be able to bid is silly. I was recommended this site but then found out that other freelance sites allow you to do it for free.

  48. dea-marie says:

Freelancers are awarded 10 Bid credits each month without any cost involved, we hope that if you give it a try then you will also see the benefits.

  49. Melany says:

I LIKE THIS CHANGES IN PPH. IT’S VERY SIMPLE AND EASU TO FOLLOW THE CHANGES AND NEW JOBS. THANKS

  50. Nayeem says:
